Violin plots visualize summary statistics as well as numerical data distribution. They are a combination of box plots and kernel density plots. The thick-colored area within the violin plot is the interquartile range, while the thinner lines are the rest of the distribution (without including outliers). The dot in the thick-colored area is the median of the data, and the areas on both sides of the violin plot are the kernel density plots of the data. These graphs are very literally kernel density plots that contain box plot charts.
