Box Plot

Box Plot

The box plot chart graphs numerical data, its distribution, and skewness using quartiles, medians, and outliers.

The box plot is one of the most used graphs in descriptive statistics. It visualizes the distribution and skewness of numerical data through quartiles and averages. The lower limit of each box is the first quartile, while the upper bound of the boxes is the third quartile. The distance between these quartiles (the height of the boxes) is called the interquartile range. It is common for the median to be displayed as a solid line running through each box. Whiskers and outliers are also commonly displayed with this type of chart. The lines that run from both bounds of each box are called whiskers and display the variability of observations outside the interquartile range. Dots found beyond whiskers represent outlier data.
